Our protagonist controls Nina, a playable character in this fictional augmented virtual reality video game. While playing BATT-LE Colosseum, Nina prefers to operate solo--because she was using a modified game client to play outside of the MEGA Corporation's GamePlex--and she struggles with grouping together with other players, like Ian the Turtle. This metaphysical science fiction story took inspiration from a wide variety of pop culture, from video games (like Smash Bros, Halo, Team Fortress 2, Fortnite and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon) to books (including stories by Philip K. Dick and Douglas Adams) and back to anime (such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gurren Lagann). I even took the names of the characters from the pets in our family, and I stuck in some references to Electric Armchair’s music.

Summond the Scarecrow is about the titular Giant consuming the patrons of the Sorauren Farm’s pumpkin parade, and was inspired by the 2022 Inktober prompt list along by a trip with April [who co-wrote this story!] to a number of parks across Toronto; April likened Summond the Scarecrow to E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web, and I have taken inspiration for the Overseer from superhero characters like Marvel’s Spider-man and Doctor Strange.

In this story, the Overseer of the Forest plots the escape of those being consumed by a Giant jack o’ lantern from the Deeper Forest.

I know this is a late Halloween story (April and I actually used the Inktober 2022 prompt list as inspiration for this story!), but I know its whimsical horror will capture and entertain any time of year and every October; Summond the Scarecrow will release February 28th 2023.

Hello readers, 

As revealed in the latest Project Roadmap [which can be read here https://haikuprajna.blogspot.com/2022/12/20221230-my-year-in-reviews-project.html ], "BATT-LE Colosseum" is the next story in the Fluke series, set after ULTRAVIOLET, although the two stories can be enjoyed without reading the other. [Check out ULTRAVIOLET here https://haikuprajna.blogspot.com/p/ultraviolet.html ]

This story takes place within a virtual reality video game and follows the user playing as Nina, one of the avatars that players can choose to play as, while fighting others for the badges that computer controlled bosses drop in order to compete for the Champion position; I have been working on this story since April 2021 and am very excited to be sharing it at last; I was inspired by a wide variety of genres and mediums for this story, from games like the Halo franchise and the Half-life\Portal series to action comics like Spider-Man and sci-fi from authors such as Douglas Adams.

" The Overseer led the Forest’s Terraforms along the edge of a chasm to visit Falgara the Giant, at the absolute bottom of a great river, on its birthday.

Arriving at the garden on top of a waterfall, the other Terraforms had to promise to avoid falling into Falgara’s stream, as the smaller Terraforms would be unable to swim free from the current’s inevitable flow. The Overseer resisted, but found themself unable to, and they fell into Falgara.

Inside the barrelling pressure of the mirrored waterfall’s mist, the Overseer had to ascend in a constant motion that was threatened to be undone in the manner of the falling lights of the Giant. Even the thought of taking a rest in the mirrored garden at the top of Falgara threatened to send them back home. "

"Falgara the Giant" is a story I wrote using the notebook I made for our Niagara Falls trip on April's birthday in 2022. It is a story about how necessary stress is for any adventure, while exploring how we interact with ideas and beings that are greater than any individual.

Ado the Owl is the second piece of flash fiction in The Wisps Book; following Tomothy and the Overseer of the Forest, the Terraforms lose sight of the owl, who struggles to escape the darkness of their worries.

Book store blurb; 

" Ado the Owl, while on a stroll with the Overseer of the Forest, fell into a cave and was unable to escape or fly away.

The other Terraforms looked down, noticing that Ado had fallen into the cave, but the Terraforms disappeared one by one.

Because of this, Ado started to believe the Forest's cave was protecting them from a predator outside.

The Owl listened close, in case the others would return.

But Ado the Owl was unsure about calling out for help--they worried over attracting the predator. "

"Falgara the Giant" is the next Terraform book set in The Wisps series. This metaphysical fiction/fantasy short story, unlike "Ado the Owl", will be a digital eBook exclusive to the Kindle store.

Falgara was the project we outlined during April’s birthday trip to Niagara Falls, which served as inspiration that we personified for the Terraform; there's even an Electric Armchair song title hidden in the manuscript and blurb. The Overseer travels through their Forest with a group of Terraforms along a path to the top of a waterfall, where they fall into Falgara at the bottom of the lake below.

Here’s the blurb for the Amazon store’s page, along with the title pages; 

“ The Overseer led the Forest’s Terraforms along the edge of a chasm to visit Falgara the Giant, at the absolute bottom of a great river, on its birthday.

Arriving at the garden on top of a waterfall, the other Terraforms had to promise to avoid falling into Falgara’s stream, as the smaller Terraforms would be unable to swim free from the current’s inevitable flow. The Overseer resisted, but found themself unable to, and they fell into Falgara.

Inside the barrelling pressure of the mirrored waterfall’s mist, the Overseer had to ascend in a constant motion that was threatened to be undone in the manner of the falling lights of the Giant. Even the thought of taking a rest in the mirrored garden at the top of Falgara threatened to send them back home. “

ULTRAVIOLET is the first in a series of metaphysical science fiction short stories about a superpowered cast living at the end of the 30th century. This story follows Elsa Todd, the Imprint, who can visualize ideas and deconstruct their holographic forms. 

Using her abilities to outline objects, Imprint contacts the cosmic Source, the first person narrator of the book’s third person narrative. 

I was inspired by literature as a medium for the ideas you will read about in ULTRAVIOLET, where I based Imprint’s abilities on how we interact with ideas when we consume, read, write and create.
